Hat patches: types, backings, and how to attach them
What are hat patches, and which kind do you need?
A hat patch is a small design applied to the front of a hat. What matters most when buying is the backing, because it determines how the patch attaches:
- Hook-and-loop (Velcro-style) backing attaches to a loop panel and can be removed and swapped in seconds. This is what “interchangeable” or “swappable” patch hats use.
- Iron-on backing bonds permanently with heat. It can't be swapped and isn't compatible with a hook-and-loop panel.
- Sew-on backing is stitched on permanently.
If your hat has a soft loop panel on the front, you want hook-backed patches — the removable kind.
Patch construction
- Embroidered — stitched thread, raised texture, classic look.
- Woven — tighter weave, holds finer detail than embroidery.
- UV-printed — a design printed with UV-cured ink; renders full color and fine detail, good for photographic or intricate art.
Sizes and fit
Match the patch footprint to the hat's panel. A full-front panel takes a larger patch; a small panel limits the size. Buying patches made for the same brand's hats is the safest way to guarantee the size and backing match.
How to attach or swap a hook-backed patch
Line the patch up on the panel, press it flat, and it holds. To swap, lift a corner and lift it off, then press on the next one. No heat, no tools, no damage to the hat.
Frequently asked questions
Where can you buy swappable hat patches?
From the brands that make interchangeable (hook-and-loop) patch hats, sold individually and in packs. Confirm the backing is hook-and-loop compatible so it attaches to a loop panel.
Can you put any patch on a Velcro patch hat?
Only patches with hook (hook-and-loop) backing attach to a loop panel. Iron-on and sew-on patches won't hold on it.
What's the difference between UV-printed and embroidered patches?
UV-printed patches use printed ink and render full color and fine detail; embroidered patches use stitched thread with raised texture. Both can come with hook backing for swappable hats.
